What is RAW Photography?

When you shoot a standard JPEG, your phone's software makes permanent decisions about color, contrast, sharpening, and noise reduction. It then compresses the file and throws away the unused data.

A RAW file (saving as .DNG on Android) is the exact opposite. It saves the pure, uncompressed data directly from the camera sensor without applying any permanent edits. This results in a massive file that contains vastly more information than a JPEG.

Why RAW Matters for Nature

• ✅ Recover Blown Highlights: Nature photography often involves bright skies and dark forests. RAW files retain data in bright clouds that a JPEG would permanently turn pure white.
• ✅ Lift Deep Shadows: You can brighten dark, moody forest floors in Lightroom without introducing nearly as much artifacting or color banding as a JPEG.
• ✅ True White Balance Control: Because color temperature isn't baked into the file, you can completely change the white balance of a RAW photo after it is taken with zero loss of quality.
